Haile Selassie

Haile Selassie, born Tafari Makonnen on July 23, 1892, near Harer, Ethiopia was a great-grandson of Sahle Sellasie of Shewa and a son of Ras Makonnen, a chief adviser to emperor Menilek II. He married Wayzaro Menen, a great-granddaughter of Menilek II.

When Menilek II died in 1913, His grandson Lij Yasu succeeded him but was later deposed in 1916. Menelik's daughter, Zauditu, became empress in 1917, and Ras Tafari was named regent and heir apparent to the throne.

When Zauditu died in 1930, he was crowned emperor and took the name Haile Sellasie (MIght of the Trinity).

When Italy Invaded Ethiopia in 1935, Haile Selassie led the resistance but was forced into exile in May 1936. with the help of the British, he invaded Ethiopia in January 1941 with an army of Ethiopian exiles in Sudan and recaptured Addis Ababa a few months later.

Haile Selassie played a very important role in the establishment of the OAU (Organisation of African Unity) in 1963. He ruled until 1974 when he was deposed by the military which established a provisional military government. He was kept under house arrest till his death.
